MBIE is leading the All of Government’s response to fuel security, working closely with Ministers, agencies, and industry to support secure and reliable fuel supply for New Zealand. Our work includes monitoring supply and market conditions, identifying and managing risks, and providing timely analysis and advice to inform decision-making. The work is fast-paced and collaborative, with a strong focus on ensuring continuity of supply while supporting longer-term system resilience.
Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
MBIE is seeking experienced Data Analysts and Senior Data Analysts to support its ongoing fuel supply response work. This work sits at the centre of MBIE’s system leadership role, providing timely, high-quality analysis and insights to Ministers and senior decision-makers on fuel supply, market dynamics, and emerging risks.
Working as part of a fast‑paced, highly collaborative team, you will contribute to the development and delivery of regular fuel data and analysis products, respond to emerging issues, and help ensure government has a robust evidence base to support informed decisions.
This is a unique opportunity to apply analytical expertise in a real‑world, high‑impact environment, operating under time pressure and with strong visibility across MBIE and the wider public sector.

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and Experience Required
For Data Analysts, we are looking for the following:
- A background in statistics, econometrics, applied economics, or a related discipline is essential
- Experience with R or a comparable statistical programming language is essential
- Is self-motivated and comfortable with ambiguity, and able to work independently while seeking guidance when needed
- Can deliver high-quality results under pressure and in a changing environment
- Is customer-focused and can develop relationships with a range of stakeholders
- Enjoys working in a heavily team-focused, collaborative environment
For Senior Data Analysts, we are looking for the following:
- Can develop, lead, and implement large and complex projects.
- Has intermediate to advanced skills in R, or a comparable statistical programming language.
- Is a self-starter and comfortable working with ambiguity.
- Can work closely with policy areas to understand the issues and create relevant insights to them.
- Is customer-focused and develop strong relationships with key stakeholders.
- Can deliver high-quality results under pressure and in a changing environment.
- Enjoys an open, collaborative environment that encourages quality, innovation, and on-going learning.
- Experience in forecasting and/or modelling is desirable

The duration of the Fuel Response Programme will depend on the Government’s requirements in responding to the international fuel situation. As a result, these are 6 month fixed-term or secondment roles and may conclude early or extend if/when those requirements change or are met.
