Tō mātou ahurea me ngā uara - Our culture and values

Kia hihiko koe - Bring your whole self to work

Our people are connected by our common goal of sustainably growing New Zealand’s economy for the benefit of our people. No matter the role, the department or the purpose, across MBIE the outcome remains the same – in everything we do, we’re improving the lives of New Zealanders.

At MBIE, our way of working is guided by our Values and aligning behaviours.

Our people are our priority. Through our Values, we’ve created an environment where people want to come each day, where they feel safe to be themselves, and where they’re empowered to strive to reach their personal goals. We use the Te Whare Tapa Whā to support Hauora (wellbeing) providing a sense of place and support. This positive health, safety and wellbeing culture is backed by robust practices, policies and procedures.

Māia - Bold and Brave

Tāwhia tō mana kia mau, kia māia - Retain and hold fast to your mana, be bold, be brave

  • We challenge the status quo
  • We’re curious
  • We explore new ideas

Pae Kahurangi - Build Our Future

Ka huri taku aro ki te pae kahurangi, kei reira te oranga mōku - We turn our attention to the future, that’s where the opportunities lie

  • We learn from the past to shape the future
  • We protect what’s precious, our taonga
  • We listen to lead the way

Mahi Tahi - Better Together

Ā mātou mahi katoa, ka pono, ka tika - Taking responsibility to commit to doing things right

  • We take responsibility and do what we say we will
  • We embrace the differences of others, always
  • We hold ourselves and each other to account

Ruia te kanorua kia puāwai - Inclusive and diverse

At MBIE we believe an inclusive environment recognises, values and respects the differences of our people, allowing everyone to do their best work. We want MBIE to be a safe and inclusive place to achieve, where people have a strong sense of belonging and are comfortable bringing their unique selves to work.

Whakanui Tangata - Celebration and recognition

Celebrating our everyday wins is an important part of our culture. Our teams, branches and groups regularly get together to recognise and celebrate colleagues who demonstrate our values and go the extra mile to make MBIE successful.

Tiaki Tangata - We look after you

Wellbeing is an important part of working together to make sure we are healthy and safe. Te Puna Ora is set up as our wellbeing hub, it includes a wealth of information - articles, expert advice, team challenges and competitions. We provide digital courses for people to support resilience, engagement, job satisfaction and improving your overall Hauora (wellbeing).

Whanaungatanga - Our people value connection

MBIE supports and encourages connection. We have a variety of different MBIE People-led networks, all helping to create an inclusive environment where everyone is supported to succeed. Some of these are:

Te Aka Matua - Māori Staff Network

Te Rau Puāwai - Māori Women's Network

Ngāi Kahukura – The Rainbow Network

Pasifika Komiti – Pasifika Staff Network
