Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

 

 

We’re looking for a highly experienced and forward-thinking Principal Advisor to join our Strategic Finance team. This is a key leadership role where you’ll influence how MBIE plans, invests, and reports on its performance to deliver better outcomes for New Zealand.

 

As Principal Advisor, you’ll lead cross-Ministry strategic finance initiatives, provide expert advice to senior leaders, and champion best practice in planning, performance, and accountability. You’ll also coach and mentor others in the team, helping to lift capability and drive innovation across the Finance and Performance branch.

 

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading strategic finance projects and contributing to MBIE’s organisational strategy
  • Providing high-quality advice on planning, budgeting, and performance reporting
  • Supporting the development of performance frameworks and outcome measures
  • Advising on machinery of government processes and external accountability requirements
  • Building strong relationships with senior leaders, central agencies, and external stakeholders
  • Coaching and mentoring team members to build capability and consistency

  • Significant experience in public sector planning, budgeting, and performance reporting
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, with the ability to navigate complexity
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Deep understanding of government processes, Cabinet and parliamentary systems
  • Proven ability to lead projects and influence at senior levels
  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand and consent to a credit check
