Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

We are looking for two enthusiastic and highly motivated solicitors to join our Corporate & Registries team. The team provides legal advice across all MBIE operations, including MBIE’s 17 different regulatory systems, and supports governance, integrity, and conduct matters that impact the organisation.

About the Roles
We are recruiting for two positions, each offering variety, complexity, and the chance to grow your legal capability across MBIE’s broad regulatory and operational landscape.

 

Role 1: Solicitor – Immigration New Zealand (INZ) Focus
This role includes a significant focus on supporting Immigration New Zealand and advising on immigration related legal matters. It is ideally suited to someone with an interest in immigration law, administrative decision making, and the regulatory levers that help enable the Government’s Going for Growth Strategy.

 

Role 2: Solicitor – Broader Corporate & Registries Work Programme
This position provides advice across MBIE’s diverse regulatory systems and corporate functions, supporting our operational teams on a range of complex and interesting legal matters.

 

What You’ll Be Doing
In both roles, you’ll work alongside experienced in house counsel to provide high quality, timely advice on a wide range of legal issues. As an experienced solicitor, you will work with autonomy while benefiting from a collaborative and supportive environment. You’ll learn from subject matter experts and share your expertise to support others.

 

Over time, our lawyers have opportunities to work across different regulatory regimes, enabling you to broaden your experience, pursue your areas of interest, and build a long-term legal career within MBIE.

The Work You’ll Be Involved In
Depending on your role and interests, you may be advising on matters such as:
•    Decision making and operational issues within Immigration New Zealand
•    Enforcing residential tenancies law
•    Regulatory issues affecting builders, electricians, and other licensed professionals
•    Reviews and decisions impacting company directors
•    The use of search powers and management of the companies register
•    Radio spectrum licensing and other specialist regulatory regimes
•    Governance, privacy, official information, information sharing and delegations
•    Supporting our business groups as they use data and technology to deliver better outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand 

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and Experience Required

 

  • A tertiary qualification in law and a current practising certificate (or eligible to hold one)
  • At least 3 years PQE, with public law expertise and an understanding of the mechanisms of government
  • Experience or interest in advising on regulatory and operational legal matters
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities, which allow you to convey key ideas and issues in a way that is suitable to the audience
  • The ability to deliver successful outcomes in a demanding environment
  • Strong relationship management skills and an ability to work well with others
  • Sound legal technical skills
  • Legal right to live and work in New Zealand
