Are you an experienced regulatory professional looking to make a meaningful impact in New Zealand’s building sector?  Join MBIE’s Building System Delivery & Assurance team and help strengthen performance, compliance, and outcomes across the system.

 

As a Senior Regulatory Specialist, you’ll play a key role in monitoring and improving the performance of Territorial Authorities (TAs) and Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) across New Zealand.

 

We currently have two similar opportunities across the team—one with a primary focus on Building Consent Authorities (BCAs), and the other with a focus on Territorial Authorities (TAs)—providing the chance to apply your expertise in different areas of the regulatory system.

 

You’ll combine your technical knowledge, regulatory expertise, and stakeholder skills to deliver high-quality assurance and drive continuous improvement across the building system.

 

  • Lead and contribute to technical performance reviews of TAs and BCAs
  • Monitor, analyse, and report on regulatory system performance
  • Provide expert advice on building control issues
  • Develop insights and recommendations to improve regulatory outcomes
  • Engage with councils through education, guidance, and support
  • Coach and mentor team members to build capability
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across government and the building sector
  • Contribute to MBIE’s broader regulatory stewardship role

Skills and Experience Required
 

You’ll bring a strong mix of technical, regulatory, and interpersonal skills, including:

 

  • Solid knowledge of the Building Act and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience working within regulatory processes and systems
  • Proven ability to manage stakeholders and complex relationships
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities
  • Experience in project management and delivering reviews
  • Excellent written communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and support others
  • Confidence working independently in a distributed/virtual team
  • A proactive mindset with strong risk identification and problem-solving skills
  • You must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand
