This is a great opportunity to join a team of talented Science Investment Managers who enable the Government's investment to achieve successful science outcomes. Join our team on a permanent, full time basis.

The Strategic Investments Team sits at the centre of MBIE’s research and innovation system, shaping how government investment delivers long‑term value for New Zealand. The team leads the design, stewardship, and strategic oversight of mission-led research and infrastructure contracts under the Strategic Science Investment Fund, ensuring investments are aligned with government priorities and deliver strong environmental, social, economic, and cultural outcomes.

Our goal is to use science excellence to generate transformative impact for New Zealand. We build knowledge and strong constructive relationships with the science, research and end user community; we manage investment and contracting relationships to contribute to smart funding decisions; we monitor and evaluate the performance of investments; and we work in science topic areas across the science system. The Senior Investment Manager role supports these functions.

This role provides broad exposure to New Zealand’s science and innovation system, and opens progression pathways both within MBIE and through the wider science system.

Skills and Experience Required
 

We welcome candidates from all walks of life and value a diverse range of professional experience, including:

• Significant experience in outcome focussed contract management and sector knowledge to manage science investment processes and to monitor contracts to ensure they are delivering against the policy intention.
• Knowledge of the New Zealand science and innovation system
• Stakeholder engagement and management skills
• Ability to work collaboratively across a range of internal and external stakeholders with complex multi-party relationships
• Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills – both verbal and written
• Knowledge and experience in the machinery of government
