Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

 

The Senior Data and Insights Analyst role exists to unlock and maximise the value of data held across the Business & Consumer branch, with a strong focus on understanding the performance, impact, and ongoing evolution of the Innovation & Business Capability (IBC) unit. The role leads operational reporting and analytics activities, including the design and delivery of business intelligence dashboards, performance reporting, longitudinal outcome measures, and strategic insights that inform decision making. It is responsible for maintaining the catalogue of in house reports, defining baselines and long term measures, analysing trends over time, and ensuring reporting meets ministerial and strategic requirements. The position also identifies opportunities for innovation in analytics capability, and models best practice through adherence to MBIE’s data governance policies.

 


 
Working within the Business & Consumer branch, this role collaborates closely with a wide range of internal partners, including MBIE’s Customer Design & innovation branch and Data & Insights teams, to shape, enhance, and continually improve data, reporting systems, and business intelligence services. The Senior Data and Insights Analyst represents the branch in engagements relating to data systems, participates in workshops with internal and external stakeholders, and contributes to the uplift of reporting capability across the unit and at times the branch. The role also plays a leadership and support function by mentoring junior team members and building data literacy across business users, helping create a strong, insight driven culture across the operational teams within Innovation & Business Capability.


 


In this role you will have a role supporting :

 


 
Business Intelligence & Reporting - Designing, supporting, and enhancing BI products and performance reporting, defining meaningful metrics, identifying improvements, and championing a product led approach to insights across the unit and branch.
Projects - Leading and supporting ad hoc projects as the SME for Innovation & Business Capability.
Process Improvement - Developing best practice data processes, identifying risks and opportunities, and contributing to continuous improvement of MBIE’s data management and BI frameworks.
Delivery - Engaging with users to gather requirements, managing workload and BI delivery to standards, and mentoring and training staff in BI practices and tools.
Relationship Management - Building strong partnerships across the branch, and broader MBIE and with stakeholders to support end to end delivery, share best practice, and represent MBIE positively.
 

 

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and Experience Required


 

  • 5+ years’ experience working with Business Intelligence and analytical tools, principles, methodologies along with a demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining specialist skills and knowledge in the area.
  • At least 2+ years experience in using reporting and BI tools including Power BI. Strong technical skills including advanced SQL and Cloud solutions.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in cross-functional teams and collaborating with business stakeholders to deliver data initiatives or data products.
  • Significant technical experience in data analysis, data quality management, data visualisation and data governance frameworks. 
  • Experience with longitudinal analysis, benefits realisation, or outcomes based performance measurement, including the use of time series, trend, or cohort based analysis.
  • Strong understanding of transactional and reporting databases and Data warehouses.
  • Considerable analytical experience using complex and disparate information to deliver insights and trends.
  • Ability to interpret and create data documentation including dictionaries, report catalogues and models.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops working with business and technical staff to define data products.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills. The ability to synthesise business, policy and technical issues and present them with simplicity and clarity that can be understood by a range of audiences.
  • Ability to interpret and create data documentation including dictionaries, report catalogues and models.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops working with business and technical staff to define data products.
