Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
We are on the hunt for a fixed term senior communications advisor to support a range of portfolios and functions at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
We need an experienced and adaptable communications practitioner who is keen to get stuck in and add value. If you’re experienced at delivering excellent coms plans, engaging content and identifying coms opportunities and risks, then this role could be for you. It’s also a chance to develop your skills and experience with policy communications and working with ministers’ offices. In our world, no one day is ever the same and there is no time for boredom!
You will mainly support our external communications mahi in Economic Growth, Workplace Relations and Safety and ACC policy coms, delivering comms support to MBIE teams and also Ministers’ offices for new policy, legislation and other announcements/ communications needs. You may also help or lead on other projects across the rest of our Labour, Science and Enterprise communications team – in particular our tourism work. Our team of talented and top-notch communications professionals is very collaborative and supportive, expert at juggling and working in a fast-paced environment; and leaning in to help each other out. We deliver communications support for a wide range of high profile and cutting-edge ministerial portfolios which are key to New Zealand’s economic growth - from tourism and Immigration policy, to Space Agency coms and Science, Innovation and Technology. The work is never dull and our people are great to work with.
The fixed term position will cover a staff member on parental leave and will run for nine months from April to December.

To be successful in this role, you need to be able to:
- think on your feet, work under pressure and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- write well, develop, design and deliver comprehensive communications strategies
- help manage our media relationships and have a sound understanding of the media landscape
- build strong working relationships with senior managers, ministers’ offices and subject matter experts
- use your knowledge about central Government decision-making and operating procedures
- demonstrate a proactive, positive approach, bringing great ideas to the table, with sound judgement and discretion
- use your deep experience in issues and risk management, proactive engagement and communications planning.
Ideally you would also have more than five years’ experience in creating and delivering internal and/or external communications strategies and supporting material.
