Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

 

The Government Property Office leads the strategic direction of the government’s office accommodation portfolio and MBIE’s own property strategy. With a footprint of over 1,000,000 sqm and a rental spend of $330 million annually, we’re shaping the future of government property.

 

We’re looking for experienced Project Managers and Senior Project Managers to join our Leasing and Projects Team, managing refurbishment, construction, and security projects that support MBIE and wider government needs. You’ll be responsible for end-to-end project delivery, stakeholder engagement, and ensuring projects are completed to specification, on time and within budget.

 

The Senior Project Manager will also lead complex projects from ideation through to completion, coordinate business change and IT systems integration, and contribute to the overarching Property Strategy. This role requires a high level of leadership, strategic thinking, and stakeholder influence.

  • Proven experience managing property projects, ideally in construction, refurbishment, or security
  • Strong understanding of project management principles and delivery frameworks
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
  • Confident analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong communication skills – able to present complex issues clearly
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Project, Word, and ideally Visio/Excel
  • Understanding of the machinery of government and property environments
  • Experience with contract management and procurement processes
  • Tertiary qualification in architecture, engineering, design, building services, project management or comparable experience
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand

 

For the Senior role we are looking for: 

 

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in construction project delivery (Senior Project Manager)
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing complex, multi-vendor projects
  • Relevant certifications (e.g. PRINCE2, PMI, Agile)
  • High financial literacy and experience managing significant budgets
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders and governance groups
  • Experience mentoring and coaching project teams
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to align projects with broader organisational goals
  • Experience coordinating business change, IT systems, and reporting needs
  • Oversight of post-occupancy reviews and operational handovers
