Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

The Private Secretary role supports the Minister for Regional Development in the Regional Development portfolio. This is a fast-paced and dynamic portfolio, focused on delivering the government’s high-priority $1.2bn Regional Infrastructure Fund. 

This is an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the workings of government from a different angle.  You will gain experience supporting Minister, working closely with a range of MBIE staff, relevant Crown entities and wider Parliamentary staff. Your contribution will help to ensure seamless liaison between the Department and the Minister’s Office. 

 

In this role you will have ample opportunity to make a difference through the provision of effective and appropriate support and advice.  You’ll also use your excellent relationship management and influencing skills to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and actively build and manage a network of contacts within Parliament, the Ministry and other external portfolio stakeholders.


 
This is an opportunity for someone already employed within the public service.

Skills and Experience Required
 

This role would suit a person who thrives in a fast-paced and challenging work environment; and therefore you will need to demonstrate:
 

  • Able to manage a large workflow on behalf of MBIE and the Minister with flexibility and sound judgement to respond to changing and evolving priorities and ensure deadlines are met
  • Able to react quickly to assess situations, synthesise information and make judgement calls in order to deliver at short notice
  • Strong written communication and reviewing/proofreading skills with an eye for detail 
  • Experience with the machinery of government; particularly ministerial correspondence, OIAs and parliamentary questions
  • Good knowledge of government administration and legal requirements around dealing with private and official information 
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage processes and meet competing deadlines 
  • Well-developed relationship management skills and confidence working with a wide range of people at all levels
  • The ability to work independently, motivate yourself, and remain calm, focussed and resilient under pressure
  • Sound judgement and high personal integrity.

 
The ideal candidate might already have experience in the area of Policy and/or Ministerial Services and be looking to advance their career through increasing their political nous and understanding of the system of Government in preparation for their next step on the Government career ladder.  
 
The role requires a Confidential Security Clearance.
