We are looking for a Principal Advisor to lead the development and delivery of digital strategies that boost customer experiences across key MBIE online platforms such as IPONZ, business.govt.nz, and The Companies Office.
Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
The role sits in the Online Channels team, within MBIE’s Customer Service Delivery Branch. Together, they support millions of customer interactions each year and work closely with others to ensure customers have the information, and tools they need to act with confidence. Put simply - we make it easy for people to do the right thing.
The Principal Advisor Online Channels will primarily:
- Support the development of Online Channels as a centre of expertise for channel management across MBIE. This includes leading and supporting the development and delivery of relevant strategic initiatives, embedding consistent accessibility, content design, UX and findability standards and principles across Online Channels platforms, websites, and digital tools.
- Play an active part in mentoring the team, driving cross-functional initiatives, planning, overseeing, and reporting on digital initiatives, functioning as 2IC to the Manager.
- Support the planning and prioritisation of work - allocate tasks and proactively resolve issues to support delivery; ensure strategic alignment across programmes to deliver innovative, user‑centric experiences.
- Work in partnership with peers across Online Channels to embed the team as a centre of excellence within MBIE.
- Build and manage strategic relationships across MBIE, government agencies and external partners; represent Online Channels with trusted, timely advice.
- Integrate customer data (including from the Customer Service Centre) to identify strategic opportunities.
- Model leadership behaviours and public sector values; contribute to collective leadership forums and knowledge sharing.

- A passion for integrated, seamless customer journeys across channels and proven delivery of complex, high‑priority initiatives.
- Applied human‑centred design expertise (user research, ethnographic methods, systems thinking).
- Demonstrated leadership in digital environments with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement.
- Experience leading product strategy and design for digital tools and services.
- Strategic thought leadership with the ability to navigate ambiguity, manage risk and shape direction.
- Ability to think analytically and translate ideas and concepts into concrete actions.
- Strong analytics capability using tools such as Google Analytics, SEMrush, CMS and tagging systems.
- Demonstratable success in building professional relationships with senior leaders, internal and external business partners, colleagues, delivery partners, and stakeholders.
- Commitment to kaupapa Māori approaches, embedding tikanga Māori in culture and service design.
- Degree level qualification in relevant subject, or similar, is desirable. Practical and demonstrable experience in this area is required.
