Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

 

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is seeking a strategic Principal Advisor Data and Information to lead learning and capability building initiatives within the Data Enablement and Performance team. This high-impact role focuses on building capability, enabling data literacy, and driving change across a complex, diverse environment.

 

We’re looking for someone with strong learning and development expertise who can work at both strategic and operational levels. You’ll have a solid grasp of learning principles, experience designing scalable programmes, and the ability to engage senior leaders, influence stakeholders, and turn organisational needs into effective learning solutions.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

In this role, you will:

 

  • Lead the design and development of learning content aligned with organizational data capability goals.
  • Oversee the creation and curation of data and information learning resources.
  • Establish and manage a regular review cycle for existing training offerings, ensuring relevance, impact and alignment with evolving business needs.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure learning content is accurate, future-focused, and drive measurable outcomes.
  • Champion and drive data culture change across the organisation, embedding data capability uplift as a core enabler of strategic change.
  • Partner with users and leadership to identify, scope, and prioritise learning needs that support organizational strategy and workforce development.

Skills and Experience Required
 

We are keen to hear from you if you have:

 

  • Essential - a minimum of 3 – 5 years in a learning and development role.
  • Knowledge of a range of learning frameworks and methodologies.
  • Experience in developing/producing capability matrix, learning needs analysis and implementation plans.
  • Solid experience in introducing new ways of looking at problems and adopting creative new approaches.
  • Experience leading initiatives to improve capability for data, information, or technical tooling.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage across the organisation.
  • Clear concise writing, editing and oral communication skills at all levels.
  • Experience in or understanding of data or information management practices.
  • Proven understanding of the evolving data system and the role of data-enabled information.
  • Have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

 

Please note this is not a Data Analyst role – you MUST have significant demonstrable experience in learning and development.
