The Policy Advisor position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to New Zealand’s trade policies and enhance international regulatory cooperation.
Our Policy Advisors gather evidence; analyse policy issues and develop options; prepare policy advice; and contribute to larger, more complex projects where others have the accountability for the delivery of outputs. They have a good knowledge of, and the ability to apply, key legislative frameworks and processes, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and a strong understanding of the wider political environment to deliver quality advice.
About the Team:
The Policy Advisor position is based in the Trade & Supply Chains team. The team sits within MBIE’s Communications, Infrastructure and Trade branch and is responsible for a number of regulatory systems and policy areas. These include:
• Stewardship of New Zealand’s standards and conformance system, including considering the impact of standards and regulations on the ability of businesses to trade and operate offshore
• Stewardship of New Zealand’s trade remedies system, ensuring fair import competition with New Zealand industry through our anti-dumping, subsidisation and safeguards regimes
• Responsibility for New Zealand’s tariff policy
• Responsibility for international regulatory cooperation in order to reduce the impact of differences in regulatory settings across borders
• Technical leadership for New Zealand’s technical barriers to trade policy, including considering how to partner with government and industry to address barriers to trade
• Responsibility for supply chain policy for critical sectors and key goods

Skills and Experience Required
We are looking for a proactive, motivated person with strong analytical and critical thinking skills, and able to deliver results at pace.
You will have some or all of the following:
• A good tertiary qualification:
• Knowledge of policy frameworks/principles/tools/approaches and experience in applying these to the analysis of policy issues and formulation of high-quality policy advice
• Ability to build requisite knowledge for different policy issues quickly, drawing on information and evidence from multiple and diverse sources
• Ability to use good judgment to develop advice in ambiguous/evolving contexts.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with an eye for detail
• A collaborative approach to working with others and experience in working effectively with Ministers, public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and application of these in public policy and in partnership with Māori.
