Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
MBIE is looking for an experienced and values driven Operations Manager – Triage and Compliance to lead the delivery of the Tenancy Triage and Compliance function across New Zealand.
This is a operational leadership role with national reach, playing a critical part in ensuring consistent, high quality regulatory outcomes under the Residential Tenancies Act and Unit Titles legislation. You will lead and develop a team of Compliance Officers, set national standards, and ensure resources are focused where they will have the greatest impact on compliance.
Reporting within the Tenancy Compliance and Investigations leadership team, this role is responsible for the day to day leadership and performance of the Triage and Compliance function, while also contributing to national strategy, regulatory practice and continuous improvement.
You will:
- Lead and manage a team delivering tenancy triage and compliance activities to a high professional and operational standard
- Take a national approach to compliance, ensuring consistency and quality of regulatory activity across regions
- Ensure compliance officer capacity is strategically prioritised and aligned to risk, impact and legislative obligations
- Partner closely with the wider Tenancy Compliance & Investigations leadership team to deliver MBIE’s regulatory outcomes
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, co regulators and external partners
- Provide sound operational and strategic advice informed by day to day regulatory practice
This role has regional responsibilities, and you will need to be available to travel as required.

Skills and Experience Required
- Significant experience leading regulatory or compliance functions, ideally in a national or multi site environment
- Strong understanding of compliance, enforcement and triage practices, including making decisions with incomplete or uncertain information
- Demonstrated experience implementing or contributing to national compliance or enforcement strategies
- Sound judgment and practical application of risk management in decision making and operational planning
- Proven ability to lead, coach and develop teams, building capability now and for the future
- Experience managing operational planning, performance, and reporting
- Well developed written communication and report writing skills
- The ability to build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders across government and beyond
- Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand
Knowledge of residential tenancies legislation and regulatory frameworks will be highly regarded.
