Join the Government Property Office at MBIE, where we lead the strategic direction of the government’s office accommodation portfolio and deliver high-quality property services. As Manager Portfolio Leasing, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping leasing strategies and standards that support long-term efficiencies and reduce risk across government.

 

Reporting to the Programme Director Leasing, you’ll:

 

  • Develop and implement leasing service offerings to mandated agencies.
  • Lead lease negotiations and resolve complex contractual issues.
  • Provide visibility on lease commitments and financial impacts.
  • Collaborate with agencies and landlords to drive commercial outcomes.
  • Support lease exits and dispute resolution while maintaining strong relationships.

 

This is a strategic and influential role requiring deep expertise in commercial leasing and a strong understanding of government property systems.

We’re looking for someone with:

 

  • 15+ years’ experience negotiating complex leases and managing extensive property portfolios, ideally in the government sector.
  • A reputation as a credible property negotiator and leader, with strong relationships across the commercial property sector.
  • Proven success in leasing management at a national or regional level, with deep knowledge of leasing principles, real estate markets, and lease negotiations.
  • Advanced experience in scoping, procurement, and negotiation of complex commercial leases, including partnering and development agreements.
  • Strong understanding of building performance specifications, design integration, and construction delivery as they relate to commercial negotiations.
  • Excellent financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to analyse market data and lease terms to inform strategic decisions.
  • Proven ability to resolve disputes while protecting relationships and achieving commercial outcomes.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence and build trust at senior levels.
  • Extensive experience in property lease management, including renewals, rent reviews, and operating expense audits.
  • A commitment to results and continuous improvement, with the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sound knowledge of property law, health and safety legislation, and tenant/landlord obligations.
  • A tertiary qualification in a property discipline (or equivalent) is desirable.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
  • Willingness to travel throughout New Zealand as required.
