Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

 

Lead meaningful change in New Zealand’s building system.  We're looking for an experienced and strategic people leader to join MBIE’s Building System Delivery & Assurance team.

 

This position leads one of the teams within the Assurance & Monitoring unit, responsible for delivering MBIE’s functions under the Building Act in relation to Territory Authorities (Tas) and Building Consent Authorities (BCAs).

 

Reporting to the National Manager, Assurance & Monitoring, you’ll work as part of the wider leadership team to drive transformational change, enhance system performance, and foster a high-performing collaborative culture.

 

  • Lead and manage a team delivering compliance and assurance activities across the building system
  • Implement and continuously improve the TA compliance strategy
  • Oversee performance monitoring, identifying risks, trends, and opportunities for system improvement
  • Provide high-quality strategic advice on regulatory and performance issues
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with councils, regulators, and key sector stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance decisions are robust, evidence-based, and well-reasoned
  • Manage operational planning, team performance, and delivery outcomes
  • Contribute to MBIE’s broader regulatory stewardship and system leadership

Skills and Experience Required
 

  • You’ll be a confident and credible leader with strong regulatory and strategic capability, including:
  • Deep understanding of the building regulatory framework and Building Act
  • Proven experience leading teams in complex, high-demand environments
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and make sound decisions
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical decisions clearly
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills
  • Experience managing programmes of work and delivering outcomes
  • Sound understanding of government processes, systems, and decision-making frameworks
  • Demonstrated success in leading change and continuous improvement initiatives
