On behalf of the shareholding Ministers, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as Chair of the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Limited (ESR) Board.


The Institute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd (ESR) is a Crown Research Institute (CRI) that provides specialist science solutions related to forensic science and public and environmental health. ESR uses world-leading science to safeguard our health, keep our communities safer, protect our food-based economy, and improve the health of our water and natural environment.

People with the following qualities are sought to fill this vacancy


  • Strong governance experience, including previous experience in Chair roles.
  • Strong commercial acumen and/or commercialisation skills.
  • Strategy development experience and strategic leadership skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Te Ao Māori and connections to Māori.
  • Experience managing organisational change or transformation.
  • Deep knowledge of and/or experience in the public sector.
  • Experience in public health.


Candidates will be expected to have a genuine interest in ESR’s work, as well as the motivation and availability needed to be able to effectively carry out the role of the ESR Board Chair.
