About the Role - Tēnei tūranga:

The Head of the Office of the Deputy Secretary is a pivotal leadership role within the Building, Resources and Markets Group and a key member of the Group Leadership Team.

Reporting directly to the Deputy Secretary, you will operate at the heart of the organisation, ensuring leadership priorities are translated into action and that the group is well-positioned to deliver on government priorities and organisational objectives.

This role combines strategic leadership with operational oversight. You will provide high-quality advice, lead organisational planning and performance activities, oversee key programmes of work, and ensure the effective operation of ministerial servicing and governance functions.

As the principal connection between BRM and MBIE's corporate functions, you will build and maintain strong partnerships across the ministry, enabling coordinated decision-making and organisational effectiveness.

You will also lead the group's Private Secretaries, Business Management, Policy Capability and Ministerial Services function, providing leadership in a highly visible and politically connected environment. Your ability to navigate complexity, build trusted relationships, and anticipate emerging issues will be critical to your success.

This role is ideally suited to a seasoned leader who thrives in complex environments, enjoys working at pace, and is motivated by influencing outcomes at the highest levels of the public sector.

This is an opportunity to partner directly with the Deputy Secretary of the Building, Resources and Markets (BRM) Group, providing strategic leadership, organisational oversight, and trusted advice across a broad and complex portfolio that has a significant impact on New Zealand's economy, communities and future growth.

In this role, you will:

• Act as a trusted strategic advisor to the Deputy Secretary and BRM Leadership Team.
• Shape the strategic direction and organisational performance of a group responsible for some of New Zealand's most significant regulatory, policy and operational functions.
• Lead critical business management, capability and ministerial services functions.
• Influence outcomes across MBIE by working closely with senior leaders, corporate functions, Ministers' offices and key external stakeholders.
• Drive organisational initiatives that strengthen capability, delivery and performance.

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong leadership capability, sound judgement, and the ability to influence and deliver in a complex environment.

You will have:

• Proven leadership experience, including developing high-performing teams and leading work through others to achieve organisational outcomes.
• Experience providing strategic advice and support to senior leaders, coupled with strong political awareness, sound judgement, and the ability to navigate complexity and competing priorities.
• Exceptional relationship management and communication skills, with the ability to build credibility, influence stakeholders, and work effectively across organisational boundaries.
• A strong understanding of organisational planning, performance, and business management, including financial and resource management.
• Knowledge of the public sector environment and machinery of government, with an understanding of ministerial processes and the ability to operate effectively in a politically aware setting.
• A track record of delivering high-quality outcomes at pace, balancing multiple priorities while responding effectively to emerging issues.
