Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

 

Join the Business Registries team at MBIE and play a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of New Zealand’s building regulatory system. As a Financial Compliance Officer, you will ensure accurate collection, reconciliation, and reporting of the building levy under the Building Act 2004 and Building (Levy) Regulations 2019.

 

Business Registries (NZ Companies Office) is part of the Market Integrity Branch within Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery Group. We are the guardians of New Zealand’s core business information through the Companies and NZBN registers, helping make New Zealand a place where doing business is easy, transparent, and fair.

 

Role and Responsibilities:

 

  • Verify, process, and reconcile monthly levy returns from local councils.
  • Ensure accurate financial data flows into MBIE systems and meets legislative requirements.
  • Produce analytical reports to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support continuous improvement of levy-related systems, processes, and risk management.
  • Build strong relationships with councils, internal teams, and stakeholders to drive outcomes.

Skills and Experience Required
 

  • Proven experience with financial accounting systems, accounts payable/receivable processes.
  • Tertiary qualification in accounting or finance (CA ANZ or equivalent desirable).
  • Ability to interpret legislation and apply it to financial processes.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and crucially attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of public sector financial requirements and continuous improvement practices.
  • Experience in credit control and debt collection advantageous.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.
  • High degree of initiative, sound judgement and discretion.
  • Knowledge of the Building Regulatory System (preferred but not essential).
  • NZ Certificate in Regulatory Compliance (Level 4 or above) (preferred but not essential).
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
