About the Role - Tēnei tūranga:

 

We have an exciting opportunity for two Data Analysts to join the Data Service Delivery (DSD) unit, supporting MBIE’s energy modelling work programme. These roles are perfect for someone who is starting out or looking to take the next step in their analytics career.


In this role, you will primarily support the delivery of the Markets Domain’s energy modelling work programme. This includes analysing potential futures of energy supply and demand, producing analysis to inform policy development and design, and monitoring how policies are tracking.


You will help deliver on the team’s broader work programme, supporting Senior Data Analysts in the team, while building up expertise in the energy sector. 


You will also be engaging with stakeholders within MBIE, across Government, and in the energy sector. To do this, you will use your skills to ensure that analysis is accessible, well communicated, and fit-for-purpose.


Your commitment to innovation and generating new ideas and ways of doing things will ensure that the Ministry’s core modelling tools and methodologies remain fit-for-purpose to produce impactful insights for decision-makers.


You will have a background in econometrics, applied economics, statistics, or data science, including experience in at least one statistical programming language. Experience in the R statistical language is preferred.

 

About the Team

 

The Domains team in the Data Service Delivery Unit supports policy analysis, regulatory monitoring, and decision-making by delivering high-quality, trusted data assets across five portfolio-aligned data domains. The Data Science team partners with Domains by applying advanced analytics, statistical modelling, and machine learning to solve complex problems, building scalable and reusable solutions using modern data technologies and best practices to generate deeper insights, drive innovation, and improve outcomes.


The Data Analyst role reports to the Data Science Manager and plays a key role in supporting the Markets Domain’s strategic priorities, with a particular focus on the Energy and Resources portfolios. It covers the entire data pipeline from primary data collection through to generating insights to inform decision-making. This includes:

 

  • Sourcing and procuring data
  • Producing official statistics on the energy sector
  • Fulfilling New Zealand’s energy sector reporting obligations to international agencies
  • Producing projections of energy supply, demand and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Undertaking modelling and analysis to inform policy development and design


We support and influence the policy debate and provide direct advice to Government and information to stakeholders and the public.

Skills and Experience Required
 

 

We are keen to hear from you if you have the following:

 

  • A tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in statistics, applied economics, econometrics, data science, or another relevant quantitative discipline. Recent statistics graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to work with data, identify insights, and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with R (or a comparable statistical programming language) and Power BI, with an interest in modelling, forecasting, econometrics, or related analytical methods.
  • Some background in economics, energy, or public policy would be an advantage.
  • You MUST have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

 

Please note these roles are based out of Wellington CBD and are not suitable for full time remote working from other locations.
