Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
As a Commercial Portfolio Leader, you will provide high quality commercial and procurement advice that enables MBIE to achieve strong, value for money outcomes. You will manage an allocated portfolio of goods and services, analyse market trends, and develop and implement commercial strategies that support MBIE’s business priorities and procurement functional leadership.
This role is hands on and influential. You will work closely with senior stakeholders across MBIE, lead or contribute to significant projects and programmes of work and be recognised as a trusted advisor who delivers pragmatic, commercially sound solutions in complex and dynamic environments.
You will also play a key role in building internal commercial and procurement capability, supporting MBIE’s objective of delivering best practice government procurement while achieving better outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand
In this role you will:
- Provide expert commercial and procurement advice across a diverse portfolio of goods and services
- Develop, implement and monitor strategic portfolio plans that deliver clear objectives and outcomes
- Lead or significantly contribute to large and complex projects or workstreams
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, agencies and suppliers
- Negotiate commercial arrangements that achieve optimal outcomes
- Support and develop in house commercial and procurement capability across MBIE
- Ensure procurement activity reflects best government procurement practice and aligns with MBIE’s business strategy
You will be accountable for delivering high quality commercial outcomes that support MBIE’s priorities and protect the Ministry’s reputation.

You will bring:
- Extensive experience in commercial and procurement roles, with 8+ years’ experience operating in complex environments
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver strategic portfolio plans
- A strong reputation as a trusted commercial advisor, with sound judgement and a pragmatic, solutions focused approach
- Proven experience working with dynamic and complex supply markets
- Experience leading or contributing to large projects or programmes of work
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to navigate complex commercial and procurement issues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, high quality documentation
- Highly developed stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
- A collaborative approach and commitment to contributing to a positive team culture
Qualifications
A relevant qualification in your area of expertise (for example legal, ICT, property, construction, commercial or business related disciplines) is desirable.

You must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
