On behalf of the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as the Deputy Chairperson of the Commerce Commission | Te Komihana Tauhokohoko (the Commission).


The Commission is Aotearoa New Zealand’s primary competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency with a vision to make New Zealanders better off. The work of the Commission helps to ensure that markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident market participants.

Deputy Chairperson


As Deputy Chairperson you will have the opportunity to bring your extensive experience, knowledge, and expertise to the table and ensure high quality regulatory settings in the work the Commission does for the long-term benefit of consumers. As a core member of the Commission’s Board, you will provide governance expertise to ensure decisions taken, including the strategic direction for the Commission, represent the interests of New Zealanders.


You will support the Chairperson in their role, substituting as Chairperson when required and, at times, acting as spokesperson on behalf of the Commission. You will provide leadership, motivation and guidance to Members of the Commission and form part of a high-performing team.


The Ministry is looking for candidates who have skills and experience relevant to the Commission’s functions in competition, fair trading, consumer credit, and economic regulation, and are able to effectively contribute to the governance of the Commission.

Specialist skills and expertise


At this time the Ministry is seeking candidates with the following specialist skills and expertise:


  • a qualified barrister or solicitor, preferably with recognised expertise in the laws relating to the Commission’s economic regulatory work, competition, fair trading, consumer credit, and public law, and/or regulatory enforcement or litigation strategy; or
  • other candidates with relevant analytical skills and experience may also be considered, including relevant industry, commerce, economics, accountancy, public administration, or consumer experience.


In addition, the general skills, experience, and attributes required for the Deputy Chairperson and member are:

established experience and reputation in leadership and/or governance, ideally in a multi-stakeholder environment, with the ability to motivate, guide and support other Commission members, and the Board as a whole, to perform as well as possible;

skills and experience to be able to effectively work with the Commission Chairperson to lead the Board in setting the Commission’s strategic and planning responsibilities under the Crown Entities Act.
