Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
We’re looking for a skilled and forward thinking Business Support Manager to lead a high-performing business support team within Immigration New Zealand (INZ). This is a pivotal role responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective operational running of the branch and supporting INZ’s strategic direction.
You’ll oversee business planning, financial and performance reporting , governance processes, corporate and parliamentary accountability activities, business continuity, and assurance. You’ll also play a key role in coordinating cross-branch activity and leading key strategic initiatives that contribute to outcomes for all New Zealanders.
The Business Support team is part of a wider INZ business support network. The Business Support team you’ll lead provides ‘lean-in’ support to two other INZ branches. Therefore you’ll be responsible for the co-ordination and prioritisation of support to ensure support is provided in a balanced way at the right time, and in the right place.
This role reports directly to the Associate Deputy Secretary Immigration, Immigration New Zealand.
What you’ll be doing:
As our Business Support Manager, you will:
Lead business support and strategic planning
- Drive the business planning process for the branch, ensuring alignment with INZ and MBIE priorities.
- Identify emerging strategic issues and integrate these into planning and decision-making.
- Provide insight and collaboration across INZ to shape future strategic direction.
- Lead branch financial reporting, budgeting processes, and performance insights.
Deliver accountability and assurance
- Manage corporate and parliamentary accountability work (e.g. Annual Report input, OIAs, budget processes, Select Committee material).
- Oversee business continuity planning and branch assurance activities.
Lead people and build capability
- Lead, coach and develop a small team, ensuring exceptional performance, engagement, and capability growth.
- Identify future capability needs and implement strategies to address them.
Build strong relationships
- Form trusted relationships across INZ, MBIE, and with external stakeholders.
- Contribute to a collaborative branch culture that shares knowledge and drives improvement.

Skills and Experience Required
We’re seeking someone with:
- A proven leadership background in business planning, financial management, or business analysis.
- Strong strategic thinking skills and the ability to see patterns, trends, and connections.
- Highly developed financial, analytical, and problem solving abilities.
- Demonstrated experience improving processes and lifting productivity.
- Understanding of Government structures, planning, and reporting.
- Experience managing risk, projects, and organisational performance.
- A collaborative and motivating leadership style that brings out the best in people.
- A tertiary qualification in Business Management or a related field, or equivalent experience.
You must also:
- Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident class visa holder.
- Be able to obtain and maintain a national security clearance.
- Consent to relevant credit checks.
