Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) works with users of the intellectual property regulatory system in the examination and granting or registration of intellectual property rights: patents; designs; trade marks; geographical indications; and plant variety rights. We are also responsible for intellectual property education and awareness programmes. IPONZ is a key part of the IP regulatory system which, when running effectively, supports intellectual property owners, innovators and creators by incentivising innovation and investment and facilitating trade in new products and services, as well as encouraging creative expression to bring tangible societal and economic benefits to New Zealand.
The Associate Hearings Case Officer role is part of the IPONZ’s structured hearings case officer training programme. You will train and work under supervision as you build your skills in the role. You will be actively mentored and coached as you develop your knowledge, skills, and experience. Once trained you can apply for progression to become a Hearings Case Officer in the IPONZ progression rounds held twice a year. As Associate Hearings Case Officer you will report to the Team Leader Hearing in the hearings team within IPONZ.
Activities you will be trained in and expected to learn in the role include:
• Scheduling and attending hearings as the support officer, including the formal introduction of the hearing and preparations in advance of hearing (such as compiling case files for the decision maker).
• Supervised work on trade mark proceedings cases.
• Assessing compliance of a broad range of applications and/or requests.
• Drafting correspondence clearly setting out the Office’s position with respect to any legal or procedural issues.
• Liaise and communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholders including other teams within IPONZ, parties to proceedings, their legal counsel, and the public to provide information regarding the hearings process.
You will work closely with the Senior Hearings Case Officer and wider hearings team.

• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions on imperfect information.
• An understanding of the machinery of government, and experience in understanding and applying legislation and organisational policies.
• Excellent customer service and experience in relationship management.
• Relevant tertiary qualification (for example law) or alternatively experience in a litigation environment is required.
• Good attention to detail, and the ability to keep to timeframes.
• Strong organisational and IT skills.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
