Salary range for Associate Examiner levels 1 and 2 - $60,727 - $77,359
Salary range for Examiner - $75,114 - $88,266
Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
Within our IPONZ Trade Marks Team we currently have two 12 month fixed term opportunities based in our Auckland office for either Associate Trade Mark Examiner levels 1 to 2, or Trade Mark Examiner roles.
Associate Trade Mark Examiner 1 is the first stage in IPONZ’s structured trade mark examiner training programme. Associate Trade Mark Examiners train and work under supervision as they build their skills in the examination of applications for trade marks.
Associate Trade Mark Examiner 2 is the second stage in IPONZ’s structured trade mark examiner training programme. At this level some independence in trade mark examination is enabled while otherwise continuing to train and work under supervision.
The Trade Mark Examiner role is for examiners who have completed the initial training provided to Associate Examiners and who can now conduct trade mark examination without supervision.
In our Trade Mark roles this role you will utilise your research, evaluation and analytical skills, to examine trade mark applications to ensure that they meet requirements under the current legislation. This includes formalities examination, conducting appropriate research to determine whether or not the trade mark is distinctive and whether or not it is confusingly similar to other trade marks already on the register.
You will receive initial training and support from the team to assist you in the role.

• Skills in researching, interpreting, analysing, problem solving and evaluating information and its practical application, including writing reports
• Excellent verbal and written English language skills, and can communicate ideas clearly both verbally and in writing
• Robust interpersonal skills including the ability to work with a wide range of people, and a strong customer focus
• Comfort working in the grey within a fast paced and changeable environment
• A focused, detail oriented, conscientious, and responsive approach
• The ability to learn quickly and receive and implement feedback well
• Effective decision making and time management skills
• Tertiary qualification
In addition to the above, candidates who wish to be considered for roles above Associate Examiner 1 must have:
• For Associate Trade Mark Examiner 2; some recent experience examining trade marks in New Zealand or a comparable jurisdiction.
• For Trade Mark Examiner; recent experience independently examining trade marks in New Zealand or a comparable jurisdiction.
