About the Role - Tēnei tūranga:

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is seeking an experienced Team Leader to join our Business Registries team as Team Leader Investigations.

This is a unique opportunity to lead a high-performing team responsible for investigative and enforcement work undertaken on behalf of the Registrar of Companies and the Official Assignee. You will play a critical role in supporting compliance outcomes, protecting the integrity of New Zealand's corporate regulatory system, and ensuring legislative requirements are upheld.

As a trusted leader, you will guide complex investigations and prosecutions, provide specialist expertise, and foster a collaborative culture focused on delivering outstanding regulatory outcomes for New Zealanders. 

Business Registries sits within the Market Integrity Branch of Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery Group and is the authoritative source of information about New Zealand companies, businesses, securities and financial products. The team plays an essential role in supporting trust, transparency and confidence in New Zealand's business environment. Reporting to the Manager Investigations and Compliance, the Team Leader Investigations provides operational and strong people leadership for a team of seven direct reports.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading and managing the performance, capability and development of the Investigations team
• Providing expert guidance on investigation, compliance and enforcement matters
• Overseeing complex criminal investigations and prosecutions
• Ensuring investigations are conducted in accordance with relevant legislation and the Solicitor-General's Prosecution Guidelines
• Driving quality assurance and continuous improvement across team processes
• Managing workloads and prioritising resources to deliver business objectives
• Building and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships across MBIE and the wider public sector
• Ensuring risks are proactively identified and appropriately managed
• Contributing to legislative, operational and strategic initiatives
• Championing a collaborative, customer-focused and high-performing team culture

About the team

The Investigations Team undertakes investigative and enforcement activity primarily on behalf of the Registrar of Companies and the Official Assignee. The team contributes to compliance and enforcement outcomes that help maintain confidence in New Zealand's regulatory systems and support fair markets that thrive. 

Working closely with colleagues across Business Registries, MBIE, and other government agencies the team delivers complex regulatory interventions and seeks to achieve the best possible outcomes for New Zealanders.

Skills and Experience Required
 

We're looking for an experienced people leader with investigative, regulatory and operational expertise.

You will ideally bring:

• Proven experience leading, planning and undertaking complex criminal investigations and prosecutions
• Demonstrated experience successfully leading and developing high-performing teams
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand legislative and regulatory frameworks
• Experience interpreting and applying enforcement and prosecution requirements
• Excellent judgement and the ability to make decisions in complex and uncertain environments
• Outstanding communication, stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
• A track record of managing risk and delivering results under pressure
• Experience driving continuous improvement and operational excellence
• Strong coaching and mentoring capability
• A relevant tertiary qualification and/or significant experience in criminal investigation and prosecution-related work
