About the Role - Tēnei tūranga:

 

We are seeking to bring  an experienced Senior Data Analyst to join the Tourism Domain team in MBIE’s Data, Intelligence and Insights Branch. This fixed-term role will support the Tourism Data and Insights Work Programme while helping maintain core tourism data, reporting, stakeholder engagement and data stewardship activities.

 

You will develop and improve tourism data products, dashboards, and analytical tools across the full data product lifecycle from understanding user needs and managing data to analysis, visualisation and delivery. A key focus will be making tourism information accessible, meaningful and easy to use, including through reports, interactive tools and the Tourism Evidence and Insights Centre.

 

Working with colleagues across MBIE and the tourism sector, you will improve data quality, modernise processes, strengthen data storytelling and expand self-service analytics. The Tourism Domain team delivers nationally significant evidence products and works with policy teams, industry partners, destination management organisations, Māori tourism stakeholders, government agencies and international organisations to provide trusted, relevant and user-focused tourism insights.

 We are looking for a skilled analyst who combines strong technical capability with a passion for helping people understand and use data.
You will ideally bring:

  • Significant experience in data management, analysis and visualisation.
  • Strong experience using R and/or Python to manage, transform and analyse data.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with complex datasets.
  • Experience developing dashboards, reports and interactive analytical products using Power BI or similar tools.
  • Three or more years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience designing user-focused data products that improve accessibility, usability and decision-making.
  • Experience gathering stakeholder requirements and translating them into practical analytical solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and conveying the messaging tailored to the audience.
  • A commitment to innovation, continuous improvement and delivering high-quality customer-focused products.
  • The legal right to live and work in New Zealand and the ability to satisfy MBIE's security clearance requirements if required.

Highly desirable but not essential:

  • Experience working with tourism, economic, regional or government data.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand's tourism sector, public policy environment or official statistics system.
  • Experience developing public-facing dashboards, websites or data products.
  • Experience with Power Automate, SharePoint or other modern information management and collaboration tools.
