Have you ever wondered about the incredible things happening behind the scenes in government? It's pretty remarkable.
And right now, there's a wave of positive change in motion. In MBIE’s Government Procurement team, we’re working at the centre of this meaningful change - change that’s all about driving positive outcomes at a nationwide level. We have big ambitions for New Zealand, but to make them a reality, we need people like you to be part of our mission.
This is change that reaches all corners of society, having a positive impact on lives across the motu. That’s what makes the opportunity to join us more than a job; it’s a career-defining chance to contribute to something truly meaningful – for our country and your career.
New Zealand Government Procurement is a branch within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
We are here to guide behavioural and system change. Our purpose is to lead and support those doing the mahi in the procurement system, whether they're government agencies or the suppliers they work with.
Every year, government agencies spend approximately $51.5 billion on various goods and services—for context that’s about 17% of GDP. We're not the ones doing the spending though. We're more like a hub of data, systems, engagement, commercial and change people who are passionate about procurement. And yes, we've got some core procurement experts in our mix too!
Our vision is simple: we want New Zealand's government procurement to be fair, transparent, inclusive, and efficient. It will deliver more value and respond to changing government priorities.
What keeps us empowered is the impact we're already making. It's not just about getting contracts; it's about contracts that make a difference—like those with goals to reduce emissions, support workers and businesses, minimise waste, or strengthen relationships with iwi. Our ambition knows no bounds; we're determined to keep delivering and pushing for the good that procurement can achieve for our society.
Our work is far from mundane. It spans a wide range of fascinating and challenging projects that touch on society, the economy, culture, and the environment. Looking at how government can reduce carbon emissions, setting the direction for management of large, strategic government suppliers or influencing system wide change across commercial categories is all in a day’s work. Where we have influence, we can use it to bring about transformational, even generational change. We're looking for people who share our vision and want to be part of this exciting journey.
We set the policy direction, strategy and framework for procurement in the New Zealand public sector.
We make procurement easier through systems and frameworks that support quality decision-making, including the Government Electronic Tendering Service (GETS).
We help build procurement capability within agencies through training and development, and other tools and resources.
We support government agencies with advice and expertise.
We set up and manage All-of-Government contracts for goods and services, from stationery to Hybrid and Electric vehicles.
We are working towards an innovative e-procurement ecosystem that makes it easier for government and suppliers to do business; and where information, tools and business opportunities are accessible, timely and targeted.
Here at Government Procurement, we’re about transformation, progress, and helping to make change happen. If you're up for the challenge and ready to be part of a brighter, more positive future for New Zealand, come join us.
