New Zealand Government Procurement is a branch within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). We are here to guide behavioural and system change.
While we live and breathe procurement, our branch is here to both lead and support those doing the mahi in the procurement system – government agencies, and the suppliers and providers they work with.
Each year, government agencies spend approximately $51.5 billion, around 14% GDP, on a wide range of goods and services. New Zealand Government Procurement doesn’t ’do’ the spending.
We are less of a procurement shop than a shop filled with data, systems, communications, contract and project management people who love procurement. And yes, we have some procurement specialists!
Our Vision
We have a vision for New Zealand’s government procurement to be fair, transparent, inclusive, and efficient. It will deliver more value and respond to changing government priorities.
We are passionate about what the system is already delivering – outcomes that are wider than the delivery of a contract for goods and services. We love to see contracts that build in targets in to reduce emissions, support workers and businesses, or reduce waste or strengthen relationships with iwi. Our ambition is to keep delivering more and for even greater procurement delivery.
We have a breadth of interesting, exciting and challenging work that affects wider social, economic, cultural and environmental outcomes. Looking at how government can reduce carbon emissions, setting the direction for management of large, strategic government suppliers or influencing system wide change across commercial categories is all in a day’s work.
Government procurement is a relatively big player in some markets – in others not at all. Where we do have influence, we can use the lever of government-wide procurement to make transformational – and generational changes. We welcome people who are like us and look to this horizon!
What do we do?
We set the policy direction, strategy and framework for procurement in the New Zealand public sector.
We make procurement easier through systems and frameworks that support quality decision-making, including the Government Electronic Tendering Service (GETS).
We help build procurement capability within agencies through training and development, and other tools and resources.
We support government agencies with advice and expertise.
We set up and manage All-of-Government contracts for goods and services, from stationery to Hybrid and Electric vehicles.
We are working towards an innovative e-procurement ecosystem that makes it easier for government and suppliers to do business; and where information, tools and business opportunities are accessible, timely and targeted.
