Welcome to MBIE’s engagement and communications branch

Ready for a vibrant workplace, packed with fascinating stories, game-changing projects and passionate colleagues working to drive the kōrero? MBIE’s Engagement and Communications branch is the workplace for you.

As the storytellers for one of the Government’s largest departments – with one of the most diverse work programmes – you’ll play a critical role informing the public and engaging communities on anything from growing our space industry to long-term policy processes to make our homes healthier and greener.

You’ll join a full-service communications branch, managing media and producing strategies, stories and collateral in all forms. You’ll work closely with our in-house designers, marketers, videographer and web specialists.

A career in our branch offers many possibilities. Develop national media campaigns, perhaps to help consumers know their rights, or design regional and iwi engagement plans, like ones for communities transitioning to a low-emissions future.

Communicate transformative ideas, like the ‘NZ battery’ to help secure Aotearoa New Zealand’s energy future, or celebrate projects being delivered, such as the $4.5 billion in regional development initiatives across the motu.

Manage breaking media stories, like those on the immigration front, or deliver fantastic internal communications, such as our drive to strengthen MBIE’s Māori Crown capabilities.

“From the outside you don’t notice all the stuff that happens behind the scenes, it is amazing how many parts of everyday life we get to be involved in with MBIE – so much of the work we do is special and makes a real difference!”

– Alysha, Engagement and Communications Advisor, Building, Resource and Markets

There is a reason MBIE has been ranked by Randstad as one of New Zealand’s top employers for five years’ running. It’s more than the flexible working, commitment to work/life balances and benefits we offer and value.

At MBIE, you’ll find a surprisingly nimble organisation and a workplace culture that gives you the freedom to try new things.

You’ll be empowered by senior leaders who know how important communications is for serving the public. You’ll be supported by a branch that likes to collaborate, share in our successes, and celebrate our diversity.

“I have never worked in a more supportive environment, where individuals show up every day and strive to foster a positive work experience. I love what I do, and each day provides me with a safe space to learn and grow professionally.”

 - Eileen, Senior Communications and Engagement Advisor, Corporate Engagement and Communications

As part of MBIE’s Engagement and Communications branch, your career won’t stand still, no matter where you’re at. We’ll support your personal and career development through on-the-job learning, training courses, secondments and opportunities to work across the full breadth of what MBIE does. We have summer interns now in permanent roles, and former advisors who are now people leaders.

“Since the start of my internship, I've been so fortunate to be surrounded by strong women who create space for me to be a storyteller - an inherent part of who I am as Pasifika and wahine Māori. I've felt empowered and championed in my role as a public servant and I owe it to our Women of Colour here at MBIE.”

Tylah, Engagement and Communications Advisor, Kānoa
